The Federal Government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program launches on July 1st, 2025, offering homeowners, small businesses, and community facilities up-front savings of around 30% on eligible home battery systems.
This new incentive builds on the existing Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES) and aims to make energy storage more accessible for more Australians. The best part? The rebate is uncapped, meaning there’s no limit to how many households can benefit.
💸 How Much Can You Save?
In 2025, the rebate will be up to $372 per usable kWh of battery capacity. After admin costs, the actual discount is expected to be about $330 per usable kWh.
For example, a 10kWh battery could save you around $3,300 off installation in the first year. The rebate will gradually reduce each year until it ends in 2030 — another reason to act now and maximise your return.
You may also be able to combine this federal rebate with any existing state-based incentives, depending on your location — doubling your savings potential.
✅ What Batteries & Installers Qualify?
To be eligible:
-
Your battery must be approved by the Clean Energy Council.
-
The installer must be properly accredited for battery installation.
-
Systems must have a usable capacity of at least 5kWh and up to 50kWh rebate-eligible (systems up to 100kWh can be installed, but only the first 50kWh is subsidised).
-
Batteries must be VPP-capable, though you won’t need to join a VPP to qualify.
-
Off-grid systems may still qualify, as long as they meet the technical requirements.
